<div class="MsoNormal">Writing is becoming boring for me.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Mostly because life has remained consistently monotonous since I have been in China.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>There has really been very little to write about.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><br />
Christmastime was fun.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>We spent the weekend as a group of five Americans and four Canadians at Ryan’s dad’s apartment in Zhuhai.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>We dressed sharply for Christmas day and hiked across the border to Macau to catch a Cirque du Soleil show.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It was a well-choreographed event, but I think I still prefer Guangzhou’s international circus—I saw bears riding bicycles and a man shot from a canon.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>We also celebrated New Year’s in Zhuhai with Tommy Poole.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Zhuhai houses a fantastic massage parlor, so we welcomed in the New Year with a massage instead of a countdown.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><br />
Now it is Chinese New Year time, and instead of the three weeks we were expecting to have off, we have been blessed with a five-week holiday.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I booked tickets to visit my friend, Alex Vercio, in Ethiopia.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The flight plan was great too, because it was a 6:30am to 2:30am layover, which provided for plenty of time to see the pyramids.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>And the 2:30am fight was changed to 11:00pm, which made it so that I didn’t have to wait in the airport nearly as long as I’d expected.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal">I arrived back at the airport a little early for my 11:00 flight, and they told me that flight didn’t in fact exist, but that I needed to catch the 2:30 flight that I was originally scheduled for.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>They kindly put me up in a five-star hotel with dinner to help me wile away the hours until the 2:30 flight.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I went back to the airport a bit after midnight, and I was shuttled from terminal to terminal over and over because neither terminal knew about my flight.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>As it turned out, my 11:00pm flight was for the next day, so I had an additional 24-hour layover.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Egypt Air kindly put me back into a second five-star hotel, complete with meals to take me through the next day.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Plus, I had an extra day to see the Cairo museum and their mummified alligators, snakes, and birds.<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal">I’m in Ethiopia now, where I have been pickpocketed.<o:p></o:p></div><!--EndFragment--></div>H Lance Davishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07747518608656498201noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7513091871389889779.post-48657074547708165892011-11-12T20:38:00.000-08:002011-11-12T21:31:50.838-08:00More pictures...<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYk2oM_DUsFdAPIBf8ikyVDfQHg2W1y9f2LDGdoNS4a2AmPbD0aKn3s-sxS-qm8LO8HE5pJO39A7isFbmrESGzEDSi32YdLPZJAt9zgBRUWtL_hL8wDdchjcbuRJbB3OyIrhAF2DOB92su/s1600/IMG_0983.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYk2oM_DUsFdAPIBf8ikyVDfQHg2W1y9f2LDGdoNS4a2AmPbD0aKn3s-sxS-qm8LO8HE5pJO39A7isFbmrESGzEDSi32YdLPZJAt9zgBRUWtL_hL8wDdchjcbuRJbB3OyIrhAF2DOB92su/s320/IMG_0983.jpg" width="239" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The boy in the doorway is giving away crumbs from the moon cake I gave him for good behavior. I was expecting that from Taiwan, but somehow in their transition from mainland China to that island they must have forgotten all their cookbooks and never went back for them. You'd think it wouldn't be that tough since they managed to bring everything from the Forbidden City with them. One little book, that's all it would have taken to satisfy my tastebuds for the past six months. Instead, I gradually lost fifteen necessary pounds to poor eating habits formed from a lack of delicious foods. Thank you, kindly, to those of you who have been so nice as to point that out.<br />
<div>Our two weeks of training in Shanghai was okay, but most of the details would probably bore you. The bottom line, however, is that Shanghai is probably my new favorite city. Truly incredible! Plus, I was able to get some pants and shirts tailored at a very low price. And due to my overwhelmingly perfect sense of style, I look awesome in exactly the right textures, colors, collars and cuffs.</div><div>At the end of August, we flew south to the massive metropolis of Guangzhou and were introduced to several of the people we are working with and our apartments. The apartment isn't as swank as the one we had in Taipei (the washer machine is in my shower), but it is free of rent and we each get our own apartments. The people here are naturally fantastic and we made several friends quickly. I won't bore you with their details either, just as I wouldn't bore them with yours. </div><div>The situation here is mostly as I had written in the previous blog, aside from one pretty big detail. Instead of teaching third graders well-rehearsed in English, I have been given first graders who are just now learning the basics. It's a pleasure. The good news is that they are fantastic and cute and they love me. They see their parents only on weekends, and it is pretty rough on them. Fiona began to cry the other day, and Ella saw Fiona crying and it made her cry. They left the classroom together and gazed into each other's eyes inches apart without blinking while crying big tears. It was a quality mixture of sad and funny, and it's part of the reason that I probably already love these kids. And there are a few funny names if you want to know those. There is a girl named Join and a boy named Monkey. My favorite, however, is Ym. It is pronounced like Amy as you would suspect from the spelling, but it's horribly misspelled. I think that whoever named her Amy spelled it correctly from the beginning, but she got it confused since then and insisted, when I tried to correct it, that Ym is the correct spelling. So, I'm leaving it. It helps me differentiate her work from the other Amy's--also, the other Amy's work is far superior anyway, so I could just differentiate their work by quality. Ym is a sweetheart. I have honestly never met such a sweet and cute girl as Ym. But she is terrible! She doesn't do her work. She wanders the classroom when she should be in her seat. And she has a terrible time doing as I ask. But, still, such a sweetheart.</div><div>Ryan and I spent last weekend in his dad's apartment in Zhuhai, where we were able to get up at 4am Monday to catch the Seahawks game as they lost to the 49ers. I grew a bit sick that weekend, and I'm sure you all would like to know that I got some nasty diarrhea that kept me up all night. But I won't tell you about that.</div><div>Today, as we were walking to lunch, Ryan spotted a kind lady who was selling turtles on the street. Obviously, we had to have them. They're about an inch and a half in diameter and pretty green. We got two each and have yet to name them. Your suggestions will probably not be taken, but please share if you like. Tonight, we went to town and invested in nice new homes for them. I'll show you pictures later. Of them and the kids. </div><div>There is so much more to say, but I'm not feeling like writing it. I only wrote this because Evan Kinne doesn't think I am keeping up with my blog well enough and is a whiner. </div><div>Good night!</div>H Lance Davishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07747518608656498201noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7513091871389889779.post-41735488625659661772011-08-16T05:17:00.000-07:002011-08-16T05:17:46.469-07:00Asia Phase B (or C, if you please)So, obviously I'm done with Taiwan now. It's still a bummer, I mostly liked it there. But, I am in Hong Kong now on my way to Shanghai. And, if it so interests you, here is a brief synopsis (actually, it's the entirety of what I think I know) of what I'll be doing for the next year or whatevs.<br />
The program is called a twin track program and schools students from Kindergarten to 12th grade. Half of their time is spent learning from American teachers (me, for example) and the other half is with Chinese teachers. Hopefully, after thirteen years of study, these students will have earned both American and Chinese diplomas with the obvious goal of getting accepted into an American university. <br />
The school year, as it stands, is a bit longer than our own with 220 days. I've heard rumors that we are trying to add a bit of a Christmastime vacation (contract states that we have Christmas day off--it's a Sunday). <br />
The students are placed in dorms directly from Kindergarten (lucky kids get me etc. instead of Mom and Dad (sarcasm)). I think I'll be teaching third graders. What do Canadians call third graders? Grade three-ers? Students in grade three? My point is, why don't they just call it third grade instead of grade 3? <br />
Also, the program costs $20,000 per year from Kindergarten. That seems steep to me. Especially considering that I am half of what they are paying for--bless their hearts.<br />
Anyway, I'll be in Shanghai for the next couple of weeks with the other teachers, preparing for the next year. Then I'll be moving down to the massive metropolis area of Guangzhou (pop. 40,000,000 which is California plus the city of Los Angeles a second time). It is south of Shanghai exactly as far as Los Angeles is from Portland (I was just guessing that last week, and it turns out there is only a three mile difference).<br />
Really, I am looking forward to this next year. Visit at your leisure if you think you're worth my time.<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: left;">Fourth of July came and went. They invented fireworks here, but they won't allow us to light them.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: left;">Soon thereafter, Tyson came out for a visit. We obviously made a party out of it. He showed up Friday night, the ninth. He's lucky that he works nights at home, otherwise I'd have dragged him around Taipei the next day while he was sleeping, and that would be uncomfortable for me. We saw most of Taipei's wonders that day. On Sunday, we went to a little town outside of Taipei called Wulai where two rivers met together. We followed the smaller river upstream to a spot where we met with several other teachers to go swimming and jumping off the rocks. It was mostly a good afternoon. And I saw my first big snake--probably about six feet long.</div></div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: left;">We were going to ride up the Maokong gondola on Monday, but it was closed for maintenance when we showed up, so we settled for a tour of the zoo. Always enlightening. Same animals as last time. Just on a hotter day. And this time I actually got to see the pandas, which were way overrated. No action.</div></div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: left;">Tyson did some research on hiking near Taipei and discovered a mountain just south of the city which would be a neat one to climb. When we arrived at the mountain, our tour guides (a couple of dogs) greeted us and led us toward the top. After the first five minutes, our guides lost their tempers at one another and got into a big fight. Instead of interfering, we felt it would be best to let this one play itself out. And sure enough, soon the smaller dog put just the right pressure on the larger one so that is fell off the bank and a long way down the trail. It scrambled back up, and all was soon forgotten.</div></div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: left;">The trail was unique, in that it had steep rock faces that needed to be climbed to make it to the top. Ropes were suspended in front of us as an aid to allow us safe passage up the mountain. Somehow, the dogs would consistently sort out their way beyond the rocks for the first half of the hike. You'd think that after so many years of service to hikers these dogs would be in good enough shape to make the round trip, but they tuckered out early and disappeared. Pansies. We continued our climb to the top, which afforded better than average views and sounds. It was a good hike, and left us pretty tired at the end.</div></div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: left;">The next day we began a three day adventure to Long Dong where Dragon Cave is located with its world-class rock climbing. When we arrived, we met with our friend, Sandy, who had been there a few times before and guided us around and provided fun company. The plan was to sleep out on the rocks, but it turned out to be super windy, we didn't have ground pads or blankets, and the bugs were terrible. Instead, we rented a room for two nights--also without beds. But we had AC, and blankets, and a nice hard wood floor to almost sleep on.</div></div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: left;">The climbing was fantastic, and we had some of the best views ever whenever we made it to the top of a route. Tyson and I each burned ourselves really bad. Tyson even grew blisters on his shoulder from too much sun. But we had a great time. And before we started climbing on Friday, we rented snorkel gear for a little under $2 for the afternoon. We did some diving and saw pretty fish, puffer fish, massive crabs and a lot of seaweed. Someone directed us to some cliffs eventually, and we were able to do some cliff jumping. Really a fantastic little trip.</div></div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: left;">That weekend, we finally made it to the top of the Taipei 101 with Ryan who finally met up with us. And on Sunday, we enjoyed a water park with several other teachers as we celebrated one of their birthdays. And then, on Sunday night, we brought Tyson out to the school with us so that he could be introduced to what we have been doing. He was able to perform some unicycle stunts for the students, and we did some magic shows for them during class. That was a lot of fun, and the students all missed Tyson when he left for Portland without any warning to them on Tuesday morning. It was nice to have him over. Just goes to show me who my real friends (maybe just friend) are.</div></div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: left;">Last week, we met with our Taiwanese staff for a dinner to say farewell, and I was able to meet Claire's kids. They were a ton of fun. The boy played on my iPhone throughout his meal, making it very greasy as he stole away some of my food. And I gave the little girl one of my french fries with some BBQ sauce, and her eyes went crazy and she will never ever touch that stuff again. At the end of the meal, we agreed that they should come to the school on Monday. The boy is a good little unicyclist, and it was a fun time unicycling around the campus with him while his little sister enjoyed taking pictures of us.</div></div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: left;">Last Sabbath was the last time that all the staff from the four schools had an opportunity to meet together at our school. We had a grand afternoon, and one of the Taiwanese staff from our school, Fish, asked me if he could cut my hair like his. I told him no. But he asked again, so I said yes. I look better than ever now, with shorter than ever hair.</div></div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: left;">Yesterday was my last day at the school, mostly as a support staff because there were already four teachers there and I needed to be there only for paperwork. So everything is mostly done for me now. Ryan and I are planning on doing a weekend trip to Kenting at the south end of the island with several of the Taiwanese staff from our school and one of the other schools. We are really looking forward to the last bit of bonding before good-byes that will last probably the rest of our lives. Those good-byes are the biggest downside of traveling in general. In the future I will not meet people while I travel to avoid those painful, tearful moments. I will shun those I come across. See how I am continuously improving?</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />

Last week, Ryan and I had the privilege to meet up with a third friend from home, Aaron Marson, in Thailand. Exactly three years ago to the day, I had been in Bangkok with my friends Alban and Phil. Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of Bangkok. And on that occasion, I was in the city for two weeks. Phil made the experience bearable by introducing us to the delicious local street food. He'd be happy to know that I sought out the same stands this time through.<br />
This second time in Thailand was much better--probably because we spent only one day in Bangkok. It was a good day, though. We met up with some fantastic friends (Annet and Peter from The Netherlands) of friends (Matt and Alex from Walla Walla) and explored the city and had a generally enlightening experience.<br />
Once again, though, I was relieved to get out of that city and onto the beautiful Thai island of Phuket. Upon arrival on the island, we went to the popular tourist town of Patong. It was neat-ish, but the atmosphere wasn't for us. Plus, the beach wasn't super clean and some parasailing company had lain claim on any part of the beach they chose at ten seconds' notice to allow space for their landing parasailers. If beach-goers didn't understand the Thai as well as we did, they'd get selfishly entangled in someone else's parachute that they wanted nothing to do with. For us, it was no problem. The Thai was a breeze, and we are all naturally athletic, so we were always able to spare full inches between ourselves and the parachute.<br />
Fortunately, we ditched that dirty town after one night and went to the much more pleasant town of Kata just fifteen minutes south by the scooters we rented. Aaron kindly sponsored two nights for the three of us in the Kata Beach Resort right on one of the nicest beaches I had ever seen--the waves were huge (I love letting the waves destroy me), the sand was smooth, and the rinse-off pool (I'm sure the Resort did not classify it as such) was nearby. We enjoyed delicious mango smoothies at the pool bar and pizzas under the veranda. Plus, we had a complimentary breakfast buffet, complete with an omelette lady and everything else that could make breakfast delicious and fill us to the point where it could suffice as the only meal of the day--if only the Pad Thai and banana/egg roti wouldn't lure us away. <br />
On behalf of my low spending budget, the three of us moved to a nearly classless place much further inland. And instead of relaxing for hours at the poolside and spending the first two hours of the day eating breakfast, we rode our scooters to different places including the most massive Buddha statue I have ever seen (truly put the Reclining Buddha of Bangkok to shame) at the direction of our very kind hostess from our nearly classless (she is the reason for the 'nearly,' but her ladyboy friends almost took it back away) resort. <br />
The biggest problem with Thailand is that the people drive on the left side of the road. It is entirely unnatural and I never got used to it. Which side are you supposed to pass on on a four lane road? And which lane do you turn into on a right turn? It was a total clustercuss, but we managed safety throughout. We all got pulled over once at a driver's license checkpoint. Only Aaron was carrying his, and it was a 500 baht fine for Ryan and me. I was really upset with them and thought it was too arbitrary to be a respectful way of policemen earning money (probably better than CPPD though) so I argued mine down to 300 baht--mostly just through frustrating the policeman by speaking a lot of English.<br />
The highlight of the trip came in the middle of the week when we all went to the "James Bond Island." It was named such because it was in a James Bond movie, obviously. They picked us up from our resort (the classy one) at ten in the morning (really 9:45, they could have warned us that they were gonna be early) and we slowly started to pick up more passengers until the van was filled. It took us off the island and to a small harbor where we boarded a long boat that took us on a winding journey through rivers and open sea until we got to an island made of two boats where we disembarked. We got on a small inflatable canoe paddled by a pro who canoed us into fascinating caves with terrific views. Really, it was borderline awe-inspiring. Something I'd always wanted to do, but never knew how to find. Then, we were taken to the mostly impressive James Bond Island to take pictures for twenty minutes then to another floating island (mostly a bunch of piers in the ocean) for a pretty good lunch. This particular village is featured on a super inspiring YouTube clip that you'll wanna watch <http://youtu.be/jU4oA3kkAWU>. Do it now, it's better than what you're reading. Then back to shore and the resort for a total of only $30. What a deal!<br />
Anyway, we're back in Taiwan now. Just about finished with another mostly fun week of teaching. <br />

We are good travelers, and so we didn't go with any sort of plan. We only had roundtrip tickets and about eight days between the flights. <br />
Our flight south was fantastic. It left at 1:30 in the morning, so we were exhausted boarding the plane. As we taxied down the runway, all the power went out on the plane. Fortunately, the pilot reassured us that no power was nothing to worry about. So we were okay. The flight went really well thereafter, aside from incredibly violent shuddering during takeoff and landing.<br />
We arrived in Manila at 3:30 in the morning and left the airport at four--too late to get a hotel. The cab driver drove us around for aa bit, then directed us to an island resort town called Puerto Galera. At noon, we met up with our new friends, Joy and Ailyn who were heading to the same place to pick out their wedding location. We followed them onto a boat and then they directed us to the same resort they were going to.<br />
The following couple of days were a blast, and we got to know the two of them well. We rented scooters and explored the area and enjoyed good beachtime and free massages.<br />
After they left, Ryan and I rented two scooters of our own and freelanced our way around the northern part of the island. It was obviously nothing short of fun because we are fun. We found three incredible waterfalls and swam around in the pools below them and above them. We mostly just enjoyed exploring . <br />
One day, as we were scootering away from a beach we had just visited, Ryan smelled something delicious coming from a nearby Obviously, we stopped to order lunch. We sat down at a table with a Korean man, Michael, and a Frenchman, Jean. Michael, the new resort owner, told us that we could order something from off the menu, or be his guests and eat their food with them for free. Obviously, we ate their food. And it was delicious. We spent the rest of the day with them and the cook/general manager, Jenny. <br />
I climbed halfway up a coconut tree, and then got to (weakly, out of fear for cutting off my own fingers) cut open my own coconut with a machete and drink the coconut milk. Then we got a tour of the resort from the owner who was renovating it. We kayaked, played ping pong and foosball, had a game of badminton and then were invited for supper. Jenny was so nervous cooking for us, because Mchael had told her that he wanted something special for us. It was the most delicious meal that I have had in three months. Really great. <br />
We visited them again the next day, and had a fun time again. Basically, our whole time on the island felt just perfect, but we ha to leave Friday morning for Manila because we wanted to go to church.<br />
A 62 year old gentleman who volunteered at the resort ("You're a guy, I am a gay." he told us the first day we arrived) told us that he would be our tourguide for Manila free of charge. He knew about one in fifty people that we passed in Manila as well as 90% of Puerto Galera residents. So, he gave us all the hookups, incluing 60% off our hotel price. We spent the weekend in Manila with him. <br />
On Sabbath, Ryan and I sought out one of the Adventist churches, and had a great time there. We met one of the most fun families in the world there. All of the kids sang a really nice song for us when Ryan asked if they could sing. And then the family gave us a ride back to our hotel.<br />
Really, a fun trip. Want anymore details? I'm kidding. I've written 1/4 of a book (at least, of a book the size that I am willing to read).<br />
Maybe when I get back to my own computer, I'll post some pictures if you want. <br />
Good night!</div>H Lance Davishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07747518608656498201noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7513091871389889779.post-53069456984585049712011-05-17T05:38:00.000-07:002011-05-17T05:38:49.501-07:00Cloud Seeding<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Good evening.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The kids are headed to bed. We have a really energetic bunch of kids this week. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I don't have much else to say.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Mostly, I just wanted to put up these pictures.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Oh yeah! Also, it has been raining a ton over the last several days. In one 8 hour period, we could get as much rainfall as Walla Walla will typically get over its rainiest three months combined. Thankfully, its referred to as acid rain. If the kids get in it, it is guaranteed that their hair will fall out soon thereafter. So we have to keep all of our outdoor activities indoors. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The interesting thing about this rain, is that it is borderline artificial. The reservoir that provides the population 8 million Taipei residents hydrated was getting low. The rain was coming, but the government decided to step up the amount of rain that would fall from the clouds by 'seeding' them. Basically, a plane flew above the clouds and inserted them with a chemical or something that caused ALL of the rain to fall FAST, HERE! I think most of it would have typically flown out to the Pacific, but this kept as much of the rainfall within the country as possible.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I think.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I dunno, I'm obviously no scientist. If you know more about cloud seeding than that, correct me.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">But you don't have to. That could be embarrassing to me. But do it, because I kinda wanna know more about it.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Thanks.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">And now, it has been followed up by a good week. We have students at XingFu (our school, duh!) finally! Real, live, mostly good with a few bad, energetic fifth graders. They're getting in bed now, hopefully as tiredly as we are. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">We checked out the final product of the campus on Sunday when we arrived for the week. It is looking really good, but not functioning completely like it should. The last pictures below are an example of how cool they make this place look. The ceiling lights up at night and it feels like you are in a planetarium rather than a dormitory. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The beds, however, are a total clustercuss! It takes about ten minutes to make one bed because somehow something easy was made complicated. Once the bed is complete, it is much too hot to sleep in because with all the money they invested in this building they didn't manage to put in air-conditioning. That also contributed to me sleeping only three hours Sunday night. It is VERY warm in our room, and no matter how naked I am, it doesn't keep me cool. Plus, I need a minimal of a sheet over my body to prevent bug bites (I got one anyway). The school light also shines right directly straight into our room, and I struggle sleeping with merely the power light from my computer exposed. Additionally, in order to keep any sort of coolness in our room, we must leave the windows open. This exposes us to barking dogs, cicadas, crickets, frogs and the sound of jets flying into the neighboring airport. We pleasanted the situation last night by adding a fan to our room which helps keep it cool and less stale while muffling the sounds of the night.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Monday morning found much of the plumbing nonfunctional and the electricity insufficient for our projectors and expensive smartboards. Somehow they think of everything while forgetting about everything. It was fixed by class time and the classes all went borderline smoothly along with everything else. It is really fun teaching these kids. Most of them are really happy and are enthusiastic to participate. The food here is great as well. We were concerned that we would have to go to town to get food that we could be happy with, but the caterers are doing great things for us.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Anyway, Taiwan has eighty new football players. Some of these kids managed to be blessed with the athlete genes that I 68% lack. The rest of them are worse off than I am. It is fun to teach them how to throw and catch a football.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Tomorrow's Wednesday, and we'll be half done with the week when we wake up in the morning. This is not a bad way to make money.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />
Obviously, we heard about Osama. I don't want to really talk about that here, but it was funny that all yesterday evening one of our team leaders pranced around Taipei shouting, "We got him!" and "God bless America!"</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">Today, I've been off. So I went into town and got a haircut. The lady wanted to give me Asia spikes--or so she indicated with her fingers in my hair. I told her that I wanted to leave it flat. That cost about $11.00. Later in the day, I went to the dentist office to get my teeth cleaned, that cost me $5.00.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">I bought all the materials I needed today to make a sandwich. It cost about $7.00. For exactly half that, I could have gone and gotten a bigger, more delicious sandwich at the local Subway, which is nearer than the grocery store and I wouldn't have had to wait through the rough prep time.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">Anyway, this was the week that our school was supposed to be opened for kids. The new building, however, didn't pass inspection. It looked almost ready, so I don't know what the hiccup was. All I know is that we are expecting kids next week. I won't be counting on it, though.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">Oh, and since my computer died I took it to an Apple reseller to see if they could move stuff (especially my class PowerPoints) onto Ryan's computer from my harddrive. No luck though. It's all gone according to that guy. Therefore, I've spent several hours this week remaking all my class PowerPoints.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">Since last I wrote:</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">Went to the beach.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">Went on the city's biggest ferris wheel (not quite as impressive as the London Eye, but better than Vienna's ferris wheel).</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">Purchased tickets to The Philippines and Thailand.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">Did the Maokong gondola.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">Got my new card key for the apartment (only took a month and a half).</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />

And life is going well. I can kinda unicycle now.<br />
The school building process is slow, but still happening. We have a start date of May 2 regardless of whether or not the building is open. I'll have this first week off, and I'll probably hang around here and relax and stuff for the week.<br />
Really, nothing very new is going on. We hang out with people. We do things with people. It rained hard on Sunday. We play games on weekends. We go to places. <br />
Ryan made a few great videos the first few weeks, if you haven't seen them. You can find them on my Facebook page. Watch them. They're more informative than what I am writing.<br />
Oh, I'm probably gonna go to China in September and work there for the year after this project is done. That's kinda borderline confirmed-ish now. <br />
And we got paid yesterday. Though it wasn't as high as I expected because about $150 goes to health insurance each month. That seems steep. But, hey! I'm safe now. Maybe. I should do plastic surgery while on this deal. What would make me look better? A nose-job?<br />
Anyway, tonight is pasta night. The ravioli is delicious. That's what I am looking forward to after work today.<br />
Thanks for reading. I know that was boring. I'll strive to make life more exciting. Probably.<br />
Maybe I'll find some pictures to add...H Lance Davishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07747518608656498201noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7513091871389889779.post-40130980634560036552011-03-30T21:26:00.000-07:002011-03-30T21:26:54.640-07:00My job is rough...For the last few weeks, we have been mixing up our work experience. It looks like our school may not open until May, and we have just been working on lesson plans and stuff to prepare for that opening date. In the meantime, two of the teachers at another school went home. This left an opportunity for Lisa and me to teach for a week. I was able to teach kids how to play flag football, and they almost learned parts of the game. I'm not much of an athlete, so I'm not sure that I am the best teacher for that subject, but the kids had fun and would scream "football," and "hike" at me when I saw them at different parts of the day. It was a fun week, and a good learning experience for when we actually begin teaching.<br />
Weekends are always fun for us. Lisa, Andrew, Alix, Ryan and I typically spend the weekends together exploring and experiencing new things. This last weekend, we all went to a hot springs not far from our apartment and soaked for a couple of hours. It was probably the best hot springing experience of my life, and it only cost us $1.50 each. <br />
This week was especially rough for us. Lisa, Andrew, Ryan and I were asked if we would like to accommodate some 6th graders on their annual trip to Sun Moon Lake. We joined because we felt it would create good relationships for the school. What a rough trip! The first day we had to go on a big bicycle ride and see a bunch of Taiwanese countryside and spend time with kids. Then, we had to tour a paper factory and do some crafts. Our next tour was of a wine factory (with 6th graders? Really?!?). That night we had to spend in a quaint little cottage that was stilted over a pond. The grounds of our resort were expertly landscaped, and the scenery around us was incredible. We spent that evening with one of our teachers, Leo, who encouraged us to each eat one chicken's worth of chicken legs and feet. Have you done that? It's like biting on your fingers and then tugging so that instead of just popping your knuckles you actually tear that part of your finger away. You chew the meat away from the bones and then spit out the bones and go for the next finger until you've eaten your whole arm.<br />
It only got worse for us on the second day. We started our morning on a yacht away from the kids. They took us out to a neat little place on the lake that afforded us great views and gave us time to relax. Then we were all herded onto a gondola to travel to a high vantage point over the lake for an even better view. As if our day hadn't been stressful enough, we enjoyed a tour of a Formosan village deep in a forest, where we viewed a demonstration of Formosan dance. Then, to cap off our day's journey, we had to enjoy an amusement park. This place was ridiculous. There were no waiting lines, and yet the rides were more exhilarating than any rides I have been on back home. The roller coaster lasted longer and was better than any roller coaster I have enjoyed before. That evening, Leo invited Ryan and me to go to a hot springs with him to bathe for awhile. It was pretty nude, and Ryan and I decided that it was a good way to bond with the locals. Leo really looked out for us on the whole trip. He gave us several gifts and just made sure that it was a fun trip all around for us. <br />
The last day, we left for home and stopped at an earthquake museum and a natural museum. Needless to say, we are relieved to be back at work and away from the stressful environment of 6th grade trip. Today, it's finally back to our difficult labor at XingFu, preparing to someday teach kids English.H Lance Davishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07747518608656498201noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7513091871389889779.post-40051212723152240072011-03-30T21:03:00.000-07:002011-03-30T21:03:08.274-07:00Worst case scenario, I'm a little behind on my blog<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

We are at the mouth of a major river that flows north into the Pacific, and the base of our building is just about right exactly at sea level. In the event of a tsunami, it is very likely that it gets wet. Fortunately for us, we are on the 22nd floor and I can't imagine any wave being high enough to make us wet. Worst case scenario, the building collapses and we get buried alive with eels and octopi floating around us from the wave. In that case, if you are reading this, I'm embarrassed for having mocked the dangers of a tsunami, and I take back all that I have written. Though there is only about a third of the traffic heading toward the ocean below our building as the traffic traveling away from it, I don't think anyone else is really taking the warning seriously either.<br />
<br />
We're almost accomplishing things that get us nearer to being ready to begin teaching our classes. I need to learn to unicycle in the next month, as that is one of the classes I am teaching. I imagine I'll be able to pick it up, and I practiced every other day this week. I am a Level 1 unicyclist according to UnicyclingUSA.org. I will also be teaching track and field classes, so it is a good thing I'm an athlete. I need to develop some sort of curriculum for those classes, and that is what I have devoted a sliver of my time to this week. The remaining slivers were devoted to shadowing the teachers at already established schools. It looks like a lot of fun, and I'm really looking forward to doing a similar program at XingFu camp (find this by typing 'XìngFú Elementary School, Linkou Township, Taiwan' into Google Earth). If you have bits of advice for a new teacher, you're welcome to share them. I might take them seriously. Our only real struggle is with fighting the school to hook us up with dependable Internet connections so that we can access the information needed to accomplish what we need to accomplish. The folk at our school act real helpful, but they accomplish very little on our behalf. <br />
<br />
Anyway, we're gonna spend Sabbath as a group with many of the staff from the group of four schools that AEH operates. We are looking forward to that.<br />
Anyway, this feels like quite an adequate length for a blog. Want a picture or videos or something?<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">It's been a fun start in Taipei. Ryan and I have moved into an apartment with our friend, Andrew Corson. Everything about it makes us feel classy. I think I've already made it abundantly clear that I like our apartment.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">We've been touring Taipei and the various schools to which our program sends students. Of these schools, ours is the newest (still incomplete) and nicest. Ryan, Lisa, myself and another girl named Leah will be working at this school under the supervision of Andrew and a gentleman named Dustin. We have spent some time preparing to start the program there.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">In the meantime, we have just been experimenting with various versions of delicious Taiwanese delicacies and settling into our new home. Ryan and I purchased a very nice sound system so that we can rock out whenever we wanna. And we purchased our new dishes and a few other of life's necessities today. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I think this blog is very uninteresting. I'd like to add some spice to it, but can't think of any way to do it. Please don't share your advice in the way I should change it--I'll sort something out. Let it suffice to say that I am thoroughly enjoying myself and the company that I am surrounded with. I am settling in very comfortably and feel mostly, at home here. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I'm relieved to have found a grocery store with Prego!
